August 2022: Blindworm or Slow worm [Anguis fragilis](Blindschleiche): This was an unexpected encounter and good luck that I became aware of it before I was too close as the blindworm was in the middle of the forest path. I could get closer very slowly and take pictures, observe it and even take a short film when it crossed the path and disappeared into the covert. It is a reptil and looks like a snake but it belongs to the lizards (although latin anguis = snake!). And it isn't blind at all, it can even move its eyelids. The Slow worm can shed its tail to escape predators. The tail doesn't regrow to its full length, but still, it regrows. After 11-14 weeks they bring about in August around 10 young slow worms to the world. They are ovoviviparous which means that the eggs are breeded in the maternal body and the youngs hatch at birth. What an amazing creature!
