September 2014: The berries of this female yew tree [Taxus baccata] (Eibe) are ripening: You can see that the bottom part of the seeds is coated by a green arillus that turns orange and finally red while it grows. It is called arillus as only flowering plants (angiosperms) bear fruits; the jew tree however is a gymnosperm. All parts of the tree are highly poisonous - except the arillus. Many birds, especially blackbirds, like these "berries" very much.
