November 2016: Common beech [Fagus sylvatica] (Rotbuche): At the end of October many of these beech leaves have turned yellow. The late October sun makes them shine in a soft light - but only for a few days: soon they will be shed and only the buds will remain - it's a little miracle how they develop in late summer, then stop growing, overwinter almost without any change and finally restart growing next spring, isn't it? - Our beeches are predicted to suffer from climate change: Currently it's the most prevalent tree in Switzerland (we have beautiful beech forests), but it is predicted to retreat from the Swiss Plateau and the eastern Jura and move to higher altitudes in the western Jura and to the Alpine foothills. Thus they will cover a shorter area in the future.
