March 2018: A winter picture for the month of the equinox? - We had a really cold spell at the end of February: Cold air from Siberia came to Central Europe and let all the little forest brooks freeze up. On small scale I observed the same phenomenon as with Arctic rivers when aufeis is forming: The creek quickly froze up to the ground but the spring water was warmer and flowed over the ice. Thus the ice grew thicker and thicker. After some days the ice surface was higher than the maximal water level!
