July 2018: Pineappleweed, wild chamomile or disc mayweed [Matricaria discoidea] (Strahlenlose Kamille): This is a characteristic plant of our dirt roads. Its blossom could even be used as a midsummer indicator. It smells similarly as the (German) chamomile but its essential oil lacks the healing power of the chamomile [Matricaria chamomilla] (Echte Kamille) that shows white ligulate flowers. The plant was originally resident to North-East-Asia and Pacific North America, but now it can be found worldwide in temperate zones. It seems that it was considered an invasive plant in Europe after escaping from the Botanical Garden of Berlin in 1852.
