December 2018: Hair ice (Haareis) Three years ago I saw some hair ice in this forest. Today I thought I should have a look again as conditions seemed to be fitting - and in fact: again I found this wonderful natural phenomenon! Hair ice grows after spores of the golden / yellow jelly fungus [Tremella mesenterica] have colonised barkless beech wood, if temperatures are between -0.5 and -4°C and humidity is about 100%. When liquid emerges from the wood's pores piliform ice builds up to 8cm long. Snowfall, rain or touch makes them crumble to brownish drops. Haareis entsteht, wenn Pilzsporen des Goldgelben Zitterlings auf vermodernde, rindenlose Buchenäste gefallen sind, der Pilz im Holz aktiv ist, die Temperatur zwischen -0.5 und -4°C und die Luftfeuchtigkeit rund 100% beträgt. Beim Austritt von Flüssigkeit aus den Holzporen entstehen bis zu 8cm lange Eisfäden. Bei Schneefall, Regen oder Berührung zerfallen die Eisfäden zu bräunlichen Tropfen.
