January 2019: Surprisingly we got a lot of snow in the Alps in early January. We often were less than 100m below the snow line and got some sleet or for once some snow. At least night temperatures dropped below zero and so lentic water froze. I'm always suprised about the diversity of ice surfaces. It depends on many factors as temperature, speed of temperature change, wind, precipitation, water ingredients and more how the ice is forming. I don't know the reasons for this ornate ice structures - but they are beautiful!
