April 2023: Red wood ant [Formica rufa] (Rote Waldameise): Although the weather was cool and wet the red wood ant came out of hibernation last week. They probably would have liked to warm up in the sun after a 6 month sleep (?), but at the moment it's colder (with clouds, fog and rain) than on many January days. Ant nests exist for several years, so you can visit it time and again and watch the amazing colonial insects: It seems that the red wood ant even has a sensory organ for magnetism!
