We found this amazing grey dagger [Acronicta psi] (Pfeileule) caterpillar on a birch leaf when I showed my students their green-down trees. They food from August to October, pupate in October and eclose in June next year. The caterpillar looks much more spectacular than the moth (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grey_Dagger).
