This graphic shows the Earth's postition on its orbit around the sun on February 1st. We are soon in the middle of winter (summer for the southern hemisphere) as you can see if you locate our blue planet in the blue quarter of the circle. If you take the line from solstice to solstice as a symmetry axis you can see that we have about the same sun angle and day length as at the beginning of November. The daily gain of daylength will increase until we reach the equinox point in March when probably the maximum of the Arctic resp. the minimum of the Antarctic sea ice extent will be reached.
