This graphic shows the Earth's postition on its orbit around the sun on May 1st. It shows that we on the northern hemisphere are about at the height of spring. To compare with the situation on the southern hemisphere, just go diagonally to the other side: we arrive at November and can imagine what season could be in the few southern countries - knowing that mid autumn doesn't have to be the same everywhere. After less than 50 days we'll already reach the solstice point when here summer (southern hemisphere: winter) officially begins and day length starts do diminish.
