ANWR (Arctic National Wildlife Refuge), Marsh Fork: Aufeis: During winter the river froze, new water flowed over the ice where a part of it froze again and so the layer became thicker and thicker. Even now, in mid summer, the ice is still about 2m tick. Like on a glacier there are creeks (some of them deep), puddles, ponds and even holes where the creeks disappear.
