This graphic shows the Earth's postition on its orbit around the sun on February 1st with colors that indicate the northern hemisphere's seasons. Astronomically seen we are in the middle of winter, popularly seen the last third of winter begins. The Central European calendar of singularities tells us that usually at this time of the year we had cold frosty weather followed by a period (around February 20th) with often the lowest temperatures of the year and the highest probability of a closed snow cover - I wonder whether this will happen in 2014 after two winter months without snow here in Central Europe. Here daylength is about 10hours and increases by about 3min per day. In Fairbanks they have about 8hours and gain almost 7min per day, whereas in southern Chile daylength is about 15hours and decreases by 4min per day.
