This graphic shows the sun's declination on February 1st. We had about the same daylength in mid November. Now the sun's declination increases significantly every day for the next four months. The period of the really short / long days is over, the polarity is decreasing until on March 20th, at 22.45 UTC, everywhere on Earth day and night are 12 hours (equinox). Although the northern (southern) hemisphere gets more (less) energy from day to day the peak of winter (summer) will be in the next few weeks only as the Earth's systems have a response time of 1-2 months regarding cooling down / heating up (with many disturbing factors). The maximal (minimal) polar ice cover is an indicator for the turning point and shows that the hemishpere is definitely warming (cooling).
