This graphic shows the sun's declination on April 1st. We have about the same daylength as in mid September. The sun's declination will increase by about 10° this month and will continue to increase significantly every day for the next two months. On March 20th the polar day began at the north pole whereas the team of the south pole station could observe the sunset and will head into the polar night. Therefore we are past the maximal sea ice extent in the Arctic / minimal sea ice extent around Antarctica. Still the northern (southern) hemisphere gets more (less) energy from day to day and for the next six months the northern hemisphere will get more energy than the southern. Because of the quickly increasing (N) / decreasing (S) incoming solar energy we are in a time of fundamental changes in nature: spring / autumn was born somewhere in the subtropics and is heading north / south now.
