Editorial
Dear colleagues In my region we had quite a classic passage of the seasons. You can detect this in a simple series of pictures of grassland: http://www.seasonsandbiomes.net/112pictures.php?fold=simb01104 This is so to say a storybook change from green-down to freeze-up. From week to week the aspect changed from green over brown to white – this would by the way be a classic task for our upcoming PhenoCam project to produce time lapse films and detect color changes (see 10: Projects).

New front page picture
This picture is unusual as several things had to occur to make it possible: The beeches were still leaved, there was snow on the leaves, the afternoon sun just started to melt a part of this snow, the brown leaves might have been slightly warmer than the air that was cooling off now, so that the icicles could grow, and the sun was still above the horizon and gave the light for the picture. Seasonality

On the above pictures you can see mainly the astronomical (colors inside) and the common (colors around). Both of them are fixed. I want to develop a flexible approach that shows the seasons in a certain location at a specific moment in time which would make possible to detect changes. My idea is to take into account phenological, meteorological, seasonal and other observations. More about this next year.
As I mentioned above, we had a steady / classic change from autumn to winter. Here you can compare snow cover and the Polar sea ice extent at the beginning and end of November. Again there is quite a difference, the snow line moved southward in Europe, Asia and America. I’m happy to present you some pictures from South America that show you how their last winter was. In my region timber is often harvested in winter. Phenology

Here are some phenological observations in my region for November 2013:

Atmosphere
After an unusually mild beginning the temperature dropped by more than 20°C within some days (from max=18°C to min=-3°C) and for the rest of the month temperature was between 5 and -5°C: http://www.seasonsandbiomes.net/temp1311.jpg The first frost of the season was on November 13th and the first snow cover on November 21st. November 2013 was quite a wet month with totally 113.2mm of precipitation: http://www.seasonsandbiomes.net/dailymeans1311.jpg The average temperature was less than 4°C and about normal for the month: http://www.seasonsandbiomes.net/temp1214.jpg
During the cool second half of the month we often had high fog. Here you can see the lake of Geneva with some sunbeams penetrating the fog in the eastern Valais part. Climate
In 2007 when I had my first SAB workshop in Fairbanks, Alaska, I learnt that winter comes there at the beginning of October and then it normally was frozen until April or May of the next year. This autumn they had only some night frost in October and winter came on November 1st only:

Life on Earth

In the newspaper I read that the Tiger mosquito has crossed the Alps and for the first time eggs have been found. School / GLOBE

Surface Temperature Campaign 2013: Kevin organizes and runs this campaign every year in December. If you want to participate it would be a good idea to follow this year and participate next year. For teachers it would be a good idea to make the measurements yourself at first (this year), so you will be prepared for 2014 with your students. During the 2010 IPY Oslo conference my roommate was Antony Jinman. I’ll never forget when he showed pictures and told stories of his expedition to the North Pole (without any engine) which wasn’t repeated by anybody since then. Now he is on an even braver expedition: he wants to go solo to the South Pole. He started in November and plans to be at the Pole 77 days later. Among others all my active SIMB photographers will get some Christmas mail from me – please be sympathetic about it as it won’t arrive in time. I planned to prepare it in October but work for the school renovation took so much time. The good thing about it is that it gives you more time for pleasant anticipation… - and tell me if never arrives.
