You may have read this already, in the Fairbanks newspaper, but we just
came out of the longest stretch of consecutive days of weather that
remained below 0 F(- 18 C) in 30 years. It finally started warming up
late last week and was most noticeable on Friday, 31 Dec, and we also
received about 5 cm of fresh snow that day. By the next day, it had
climbed almost to 20 F(- 7 C). Yesterday, 2 January, when I took the
photos of my site, it was 29 F (- 1 C). I believe the temperature was
even warmer in some places around Fairbanks. We had some wind the night
before that knocked the snow off the trees, which had remained during
the entire cold period, about 21 days I think. I also measured the snow
depth at my site, which was a total of 28 cm. However, there is a very
thick layer of crusty ice about 15 cm down from the top. This is the
layer that was formed when we experienced the rain on 22-24 Nov.
