Our fall has been quite dry - until yesterday when a big snowstorm arrived and dumped about 250 mm of snow. It snowed all Monday night, all day yesterday and last night into this morning. It was a very fine-grained and cold snow so, although it is a lot for Fairbanks, I know it doesn't sound like much to those people who live in areas where truly heavy, wet snowfalls can and usually do deposit much more in the same time period. We are happy with what we received! Now we finally have enough for good skiing and snowshoeing and I am sure the dog mushers are also happy.
I measured the snow in my study site and there is a total accumulation of 255 mm; 250 of that is freshly fallen snow. The temperature at the time I took my photos was 18F (-7.5°C). Our day length has been decreasing rapidly and Winter Solstice is only 18 days away. The sun rose this morning at 10:25 am and will set at 2:59 pm for a total day length of 4 hours and 34 minutes. It is hard to believe that by Solstice we will have lost another 50 or so minutes of daylight!
