The picture dates 3 December 2013 from Livermore, California. We are finishing the
driest year on record. Much of the water for irrigating crops in southern
California travels to the fields by way of an aqueduct system that starts in
northern California's mountains. Rain and, more importantly, snow, levels are so low
that farmers might receive only 5% of the usual water supply. California supplies
the rest of the United States with the majority of fruits and vegetables. A decrease
in water here affects the entire county.
On the brighter side, the hills are slowly starting to green up after a few rainy
days. The rain was not enough, however, to impact the water shortage.
